You Be The Judge...

The Canteen Photo Submissions are now online for public viewing!

Quite a large and varied group of interesting submissions. Look and see for yourself- which would you choose as your twenty five finalists, and... Final Five?

And speaking of being the judge- getta load of this!!!

Well there sure seems to be no lack of Mary Ellen Mark, Ansel Adams, and Stephen Shore wannabes in that bunch. Plus every other cliche genre that seems to be the flavour of the month. I fear your stuff will be drowned by the shear weight of the safe mediocre crud most of the entrants submitted. If I see ONE MORE INSTRAGRAMish picture I will hurl onto my keyboard!

Woe, easy there guy! Geez, you Canadians sure are an emotional, hyperbolic lot!

Most of the stuff that gets sent to any competition is crap (which is exactly how some of the people who look at my work would describe it). Just like most of the stuff we got when I co-edited Expiration Notice was crap. But there is some good stuff for sure to be found within the myriad of entries. And personally I have nothing against Instagrams; yeah, 98% do suck- but I really do appreciate the other 2. I just think of them as digital SX-70 updates, which I always had a soft spot for.

Judging ain't the easiest task, that's why I applaud those who make the effort to do it right in as fair, honest and open a manner as possible. The last link in this post highlights a major "competition" in which the judges included the friends and business partners of the winner! Which is why a competition like the one at Canteen should be lauded, applauded and adopted as a norm.

Ya we have the world fooled into thinking we are mild manner beer swilling push overs. People should remember that when the US pissed us off we went down and burned their White House down. Then went home, cracked a couple of cold ones and played some hockey. ;)

You guys should cross the border more often to keep us in check.
But I'm afraid the White House thingie is a tad off mark...
