Moral- Take Photos...

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered, "Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived."

I am unable to find any credible source for this quote. where is it from?

His Holiness himself...

lol ... well, that's what it says, but where is he cited as saying this? you had a personal conversation? ;) Try as I might, even on Google Books, I find no source. I can only find blogs who cite each other as the source, no one mentions any original interview, a book or any other originating source, only other blogs. So it begins to seem like an urban myth ;)

Thanks for taking this in stride, Gary. I really don't have a dog in this. The wife got it from his Facebook page- ergo, I can only assume His Holiness himself is at the helm. Or his cat.

LOL yeah, well, read it on Facebook? It's got to be true then :)

yeah, well, it's just bugging me that there's no hint of it yet it shows up everywhere. it also seems a little uncharacteristic of the language of the man, he normally has far more tacit compassion for everyone and their ways but he has written a lot and a lot of it is very varied, so one never knows, but mostly I think the really interesting part of this is how the quote has been so widely shared without the least hint of any origin, man I wish I knew how to do that ;)

but then, now knowing it started on a Facebook page, well, that does explain a lot. It's a little scary maybe too ;)

I'm sure the source will show up, I just have to keep plugging at it.

And FWIW- it's The One post on my blog with the most hits.

PS- If you're hell bent on finding point of origin though, I'd comb through and/or contact his Facebook page...

Um, you may have noticed that the Dalai Lama facebook page writes about Dalai Lama in the third person, so it is in all probablilty not maintained by his holiness himself. Also, I have browsed through the entire length of all the postings the 'dalai Lama' persona ever amde on the page and the quote appears nowhere, so I guess we can conclude that your wife misremembers. It is in all probability, just as most of the other Dalai Lama quotes that are floating around (such as this http://www.snopes.com/rumors/dalai.asp, this http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/hoaxes/dalai.asp and most jarringly, this http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/trivia/dalai.asp) a fake quote.

Nope, haven't noticed Gunnar Ol' Man- I'm not on Facebook. Like I've already said- I don't have a dog in this. So why do you persist in acting as if I persist in persisting?

I think the Dalai Lama himself asked that once... you can quote him on that!

Yeah, I've just spent at least 30min combing the web for a credible source with no luck.

I found it! and it wasn't the Dalai Lama at all, it was in fact the Almighty God who posted this Himself to the USENET group talk.origins back in 2009. Well, he said he was the Almighty God ...

"What surprises you most about mankind God?"

That they get bored being children and rush to grow up but, then long to be children again.

That they lose their health to make money and then lose their money to restore their health.

That by thinking about the future they forget the present so they live neither for the present nor the future.

That they live as if they will never die, and they die as if they had never lived.

Did we evolve God?

No. You were created

Stan B. said...

Yeah, but who did he steal it from?

mrG said...

Its from the Almighty - He doesn't 'steal' :)

Stan B. said...

It's The Almighty (1%) that always steal the most...
